  1. He actually did say his mom came in his room during the interview he gave as a child. Perhaps you didn’t see the entire interview. He said that she came in, and was looking around and looked worried, but didn’t say anything to him.

  2. I can see that he is a bit “odd” and that there are many discrepencies. I just wonder why there is such an attack as to how a person reacts to a devastating event such as this. I do not think that there was any right way for the Ramsey’s to act. In watching the interviews of the detectives who were in charge of this investigation shows to be just as interesting. The detective to who told John Ramsey to go look for JonBenet to keep him “busy” and then that is when John found JonBenet in the basement, which allowed the crime scene to be compromised. The actions of every person that night should be scrutinized not just Patsy. There is obviously more to this than any of us will probably ever know. I just try to understand where Patsy would be responsible for sexually abusing JonBenet when there was male DNA found on this child that Patsy would be physically unable to produce.

    1. It was interesting that his smile was when he spoke of his mother’s anguish. That is a strange way to behave.I agree that everyone should have been scrutinized and that we may never know what really happened. It remains a mystery to this day.

You wrote “it seems as though there was a sadistic delight in seeing his mother in pain”. What a horrific accusation to make and one that as a professional you should know better. Shame on you. You are violating ethical standards of every and any health professional standard by posting such comments. Please provide proof that you are indeed a Dr.

      2. No shame here Michael. It is what I saw and I reported what I saw. He had a mask like smile throughout but when he spoke of his mother’s pain and anguish it became a genuine smile. He did the same at age 9. Open your eyes and see what IS not what you want it to be.And I beg to differ with youa s I have every right and every authority to present my observations as a body language expert. And if you need proof of my background go to my website and read my bio. And if you are not happy with my blogs, don’t read them.

      4. I believe that the son in the interview is just plain nervous and smiling and laughing goes along with being nervous. The young man is not use to being in the limelight and it took guts to give an interview. I believe he loved his sister, stayed out of the way while she was missing because he was afraid and bed was his safe place, and that the parents did nothing wrong. The police screwed up the crime scene and hence the investigation.

    2. Pastsy Ramsey did not sexually abuse her daughter. I can see how Burke could have been systematically abusing JonBenet, out of jealousy, but I think it all points to John Ramsey sexually abusing JonBenet. Either causing her death himself or Patsy Ramsey coming upon her husband doing something to JonBenet and reacting as if JonBenet was a rival. Why else would Patsy have something to do with killing her? She certainly wouldn’t do that if she found Burke abusing her, but if she caught her husband in the act….JonBenet had a history of urinary tract infections..totally weird in a child and completely consistent with child sexual abuse.

      1. That is not exactly a fact because I had urinary tract infections when I was her age ,and I can assure you that no one ever laid a hand on me in a sexual manner until I was an consenting adult..

    3. I hear what your saying, but feel you may be a little blind-sided….

      1. Sure patsy couldn’t have produced male DNA; but it doesn’t mean she’s off the hook! She could have planted it there herself among other things, much like the bogus letter that had quotes in it for movies featured in posters in thier house. Someone here tried to be smart, but wasn’t.

      2. Burke knows more than he’s saying. Ina recent interview with Doctor Phil, he responds to Phils inquiry regarding the many people who think he may have killed his sister by saying, “I just don’t know how they can think that. Where’s the evidence yay or nay? I just know it’s not true bc that’s not what happened. ” Okay then- what did happen; and why the challenge to find evidence?

      3. His anxious smile… While this CAN be an expression of anxiety- it just doesn’t cut it for me. An anxious smile- er still has fear I thier eyes and he seems to have pure joy in them. What is up with that?

      4. The 911 call. Thank you technology. We finally have proof that more was going on- including a very much awake Burke during Patsy’s frantic and over the top call. “We called the cops, now what?” Yeah. Totally normal.

      5. What criminal holding out for a ransom gives up thier point of negotiation (Jonbenèt herself) before they recieve thier money, and returns to do so at the scene of the crime? The Ramsey’s are really pulling one over in a sick way. Also, after 20 years, if it was a normal dumb criminal or group, as alleged… For fame alone they would have identified themselves.

      6. Notice John’s voice is not the least bit troubled while his wife feigns an over the top phone call? Yeah, I didn’t either. How many fathers have zero emotion for a lost daughter?

      7. How did Burke know what was going on if he was: asleep, In a shut room, and uninterested ? He’s either a psychic, one hell of a clairvoyant, or not telling the whole truth.

Bottom line- this family is shady as hell, and if anything, knows how to keep a great secret. Poor little girl- how her family betrayed her so…

  3. Honestly I dont believe the Mother or father did it I do believe that they saw or found her brother sexually assaulting her after he hit her, and they covered up for him . They had lost one child and didnt want to lose the other so they wrote the note and hid the body, staged the whole scene as a break in.

      1. What does the mask like smile mean? What would the emotions be of duping delight? To me he didn’t look shy or uncomfortable being on camera, like Dr. Phil now says. I’m shy and to me he didn’t look shy. I think it’s interesting that first Dr. Phil said he would leave it up to us to decide for ourselves what Burke’s grinning face through out the interview meant. Now, Dr. Phil is saying it was because he was shy, isolated, socially awkward, nervous. Why the back peddeling and now making a bunch of excuses, that to me don’t look like his body language at all?

Being kept out of the public eye, he’s had very little interaction with the public. His smile isn’t “creepy,” it’s sad. I think your accusations are totally unfair–you should do your research before you brand who seems a little off to be acting suspicious. Dr. Phil made a statement about this.

I have studied this case and this family for 20 years.Unless one has done a formal battery of tests on this young man they cannot say for sure he has autism. While many believe he has many of the symptoms of a high functioning person with autism, it has not been documented.

      2. I just want to add to Shays comment about Burkes autism. I have a nephew who has autism, specifically Aspberger syndrome. My very first visit with him after my brother died and he acted just like Burke. It was a strange experience because the whole time he had this smile pasted on his face. The same behavior continued when we would Skype and in phone calls his tone didn’t change. Burke just reminded me so much of him, socially awkward and the smiling just like my nephew. That is just my experience and I believe Dr. Phil spoke before the week of the interview about him being socially inept. He was only 9 years old at the time of his sisters death. I’m sure given the passing of time that he may remember some things differently now or maybe has a little bitter understanding of what really occurred that night. I don’t believe he is guilty of hurting his sister at all.

      3. Pardon me, I know all about autism because my son has it. Autistic people smile when inappropriate, as well as laugh when inappropriate, etc. This is part of the spectrum; the social oddities that those on the spectrum MAY exhibit. Dr. Glass, are you stating that you aren’t familiar about autism or that the previous poster is unfamiliar with autism? For you to be unfamiliar with autism seems very questionable for someone of your claimed status. As prevalent as autism is these days, even those not well-versed in the disorder have some knowledge of it. I agree with the previous poster, I absolutely see Asperger’s in this young man, which a form of high-functioning autism. Whether he is innocent or guilty of the crime of murder is a whole other matter.

    2. I found this article with a Google search “Burke Ramsey and autism”, as I watched his interview with Dr. Phil. He seems very childlike and insecure and wants to give answers that appease. He seems he is trying very hard to find the right answer vs his own thoughts/feelings. He seems numb and very disturbingly as lacking emotion, the smile on his face is to me inappropriate and very much inline with someone who has some intellectual or neurological disability. The fidgeting of his hand and stiff posture and facial expressions is very conflicting and he is beginning to look very guilty.

  5. The interview chilled me to the bone. Everything about Burke’s affect was inappropriate, from the constant smile at grisly details to the recitation of horror in a sing song vocal fry of an upper middle class twenty something.

However, my reactions to his behavior do not mean that Burke either killed his sister or knows who did. They likely mean that he either doesn’t know what normal is or he is emotionally incapable of mirroring it. They also mean that I am still affected by the horrible murder of a child who seemed to this mother to be over sexualized by the child’s mother.

What I don’t understand is why this family would come back into a media spotlight that has been unkind to them. Their actions now make them look more guilty than innocent.

  6. One last thing.

Burke acts more like a middle school kid than a young man. It’s possible that the “duping delight” we all see is about finally getting his parents’ attention after years of it being directed at his younger sister. He is clearly angry at his mother, but that may be because he always got the short end of the stick with her. He just isn’t mature enough to have dealt with it,

I mean, my God, why would you name your daughter after her father and not the first born son!?! It’s clear to see who the favorite was.

On the other hand, maybe he did kill her, knows that Patsy wrote a ransom note to clear it up, John staged a discovery of a body they knew was there, and all this media is to distract the cops who just reopened the investigation?

    I don’t know.

    1. John Ramsey has a son from a previous marriage, his name is John. I assume that’s why his younger son is not named John. But I agree, he just does not act right. There’s just something about him I don’t like. But anyhow, it must have been tough for him living in his sister’s shadow. The Beauty Queen that mom probably spent most of her time and attention on.

There is a picture of him with his parents on a porch swing that was said to have been taken sometime in 1997. Less than a year after his sister’s death. He is smiling contentedly sitting between his mom and dad. Finally getting the attention he deserves. His dad (John) looks like he’s proudly gazing at his son. Mom Patsy though appears to be smiling and looking at John. I guess he kind of got the attention he was looking for but it’s telling that the attention on the porch swing was not coming from Patsy.

Personally, I think he killed his sister. I’m sure he was jealous of her and maybe he didn’t mean it, but in the end he took care of eliminating his competition for attention. I think mom and dad covered up for him because they didn’t want to risk losing another child and did not want to tarnish the good “Ramsey” name.

I wonder who sexually molested her though. What a sad short life.

I hope the picture I’ve attached comes through.

    2. I remember the investigaters feeling the husband would do ANYTHING for the wife, and that he was very enamoured with her. I also don’t think autistic or asperger people grin happily constantly like Burke did . Im no expert on that and dont have a child with that, but Ive known a few and they are more robotic acting with a very logical train of thought.

      1. Burke’s smiling looks simultaneously robotic and hysterical. No doubt the charm-obsessed mother must have drilled those behaviors into him at a very early age. If he has some neurological impairment like Asperberg’s or NVLD, he might have been incapable of learning those behaviors in a natural, fluid way. That may have been a source of chronic dissatisfaction for the mother, who came across as a perfectionist.

I have no idea if Burke is or is not guilty. But from looking at his child psychologist interview photos, I am reminded of the body language exhibited by classroom killer Kip Kinkel many years ago. Burke’s demeanor, in a vague way, resembles the stunned, smiling childhood photos of Adam Lanza. Just my thoughts.

I wonder why Burke decided to do this interview. He seems smart enough to be self-aware, and must have known that he wouldn’t make a good impression in front of cameras. Bad judgment to do a Dr. Phil show.

  8. My only question, as someone who is interested in this case: who would know how to make a garrote and tie that complicated knot? We know John was a sailor/yachtsman so perhaps he would. But in the picture of the garrote–which the person seemed to perfectly know how to create–I would never be abel to just make that without serious instruction. Who in the family would know how to make the garrote? I do think Burke killed her, whether accidentally or not.

Thank you for you insights. I hope you make more of these blogs to analyze his behavior during the Dr. Phil interviews. You can see when he becomes quite visibly agitated by a question and such.

    1. I just read this article for the first time last night and I agree with it fully! I was just reading through the comments and I wanted to reply to your questions about the “garotte.” I don’t believe this was a garotte, or used in that manner intentionally, (strangulation or for sexual gratification.) And although it’s been labeled as one from the get go, I believe the nylon rope was used to move JBR from the train room to the wine cellar by BR after she was hit over her head bc he couldn’t physically do it himself. I think he tied it around her wrists or 1 of them at least, and neck thinking she was dead and it ultimately was what killed her, maybe without even knowing she was still alive. He needed to hide her and the wine cellar was best place. This is not what a garotte typically looks like, but what it looks Exactly like is a Toggle Rope(Commando knot). Google it and see for yourselves. It is commonly taught in the Boy Scouts, as well as sailing. Which BR did Both! His knife was also found in basement not far from where she was found. In one of his interviews, it’s in the transcripts where they ask him about knives. He had 2, and starts describing them and mentions all the best things that come on the knife and the last thing he says it also has a knot “thingie” that helps you with making knots. A garotte is usually a cord with 2 sticks on each end to pull to tighten noose. This was not a garotte. It is clearly a toggle rope commando knot which BR was very well versed in. It also explains why her arms were over her head in rigor when found bc after the skull fracture, she layers on her stomach between 45 min-2hrs, we know this bc only the front side of long johns were stained with urine. We know she ultimately died in doorway Infront of train rm bc urine stain was found on carpet there. IMO, she was hit, he made knot and tried to drag her to wine cellar with it, on her stomach by her arms, then neck and she truly died Infront of that door being dragged and it wound up strangling her to death. It was abandoned at that point maybe bc he heard something? Or saw the urine and got scared. And I think that’s how PR & JR found her, and JR placed her in the cellar. He says in the interview, “I was worried about them finding her.”
      I bet he was..

  9. Dr. Glass, I’d like your opinion on something. I’ve been watching some of the Dr. Phil tapes on YouTube. Now I know editing is everything as we, as the audience, can’t be 100% sure that the reactions Burke shows correspond to the questions posed by Dr. Phil, but I found a few things interesting.

The segments I’m referring to is when Dr. Phil showed Burke the interrogation tapes of him being questioned by the detectives. As we know, Burke smiles inappropriately throughout the interview. He’s socially inept or whatever excuse it is that he’s been granted. But when Dr. Phil mentions showing the interrogation tape to him, his smile vanishes. He becomes downright uncomfortable if you ask me. The corners of his mouth quickly go down. The next scene shows him with a very tense, gritting his teeth together look. Dr. Phil also mentions in this segment that a lead investigator believes he (Burke) is the culprit and once again we see the smile fade. I find this very interesting. When something bad is happening to him, he apparently is capable of showing appropriate emotion. Hmmmmm.

What do you make of that body language?

This is the segment I’m talking about.

To me, it seemed like the first time he looked like a 29yr old adult male and not a child looking out thru the body of grown up, like a Pee Wee Herman. The change was so sudden and dramatic. I could imagine behind his terrified facade, saying to himself ” oh God! What incriminating things are going to be revealed here? And how will I come up with a good excuse/explanation, because my dad never told me how to respond to any questions about this interview!”

  13. Dr Phil kept saying that there was no snow that day in Boulder and they flashed a series of pictures of the home with no snow but there are pictures of police guarding the home with the police tape around it and there is definitely snow on the ground. Because of that I’m taking everything said on the Dr Phil show with a grain of salt.

As far as whether Patsy Ramsey could have staged her daughter to look like a crime scene. I see a woman who’s whole life is a stage. And she appeared to be a perfectionist when it came to her home, the family photos and with her daughter’s modeling and clothing etc. So if she did write the letter she could also have staged her daughter’s death to look like something it wasn’t in order to complete the job. She was also used to dressing her daughter up as a cowgirl, a vegas dancer, a seductress etc etc so this in her mind may have been just one more staging. JonBenet, the murder victim.

I think it’s highly plausible that Burke did it accidently , in a fit of rage and that his parents helped cover it up, not just to protect him but to protect the reputation of the family. They seemed to be overly concerned with looks and having a murderer in the family, even an accidental child murderer does not look good.

  14. As I understand it, the Boulder DA has now exonerated the family through the DNA evidence. If that is true, there are some other explanations for Burke Ramsey’s behavior.

Burke was undoubtably rehearsed and drilled by attorneys prior to his interview with Dr. Phil. His lawyer would have told Burke is to answer the questions for which he knows the answer with yes or no, and to never conjecture in a response.

Burke is also an extremely immature and socially awkward young man. Because his parents have told him his whole life that the media lies, he likely views any media interaction (including the one with Dr. Phil) as suspicious and dangerous. He would also be angry about their intrusion,

His smiling would make sense, in the way Julie describe it above, as “I finally got away with telling you the truth!”

He would also have trouble whenever the discussion went “off script” because he would be afraid of getting in trouble with dad and the lawyer. He has had an entire life built around mistrust for the media and police.

And, going back to what Julie said, he reminds me (in the adult moments of “coming into his body”) of something a college once told me about newscasters. Their attempts try to mimic empathy when reading sad stories sometimes makes the television watcher uncomfortable. The viewers’ discomfort is sometimes more about seeing bad acting than it is about the content of the story. That is because the viewer sees and accepts the newscaster as a friend, and watches him/her so often that the viewer senses a lie. The “lie” is the bad acting.

(If you don’t believe that, consider the clip of the reaction Walter Cronkhite had to JFK’s death (which was real) to the manufactured empathy most contemporary evening newscasters have to a tragic story. It’s very clear which ones are engaging in “bad acting. “).

It’s obvious he ISN’T acting when he is in the duping delight or in the “off script” moments. Perhaps that duping delight has to do with jealousy over his sister and the off script moments to the singular parts of the interview for which he wasn’t coaxed.

But I think some of it is relief that he has delivered what he promised to Dr. Phil and can go back to a life that is not completely framed by the shadow of implied guilt over the death of his sister,

    1. It was the FORMER DA(s) who “exonerated” the Ramseys, partially based on touch DNA (tDNA). This was a big mistake for many reasons, not the least of which is the questionable value and reliability of tDNA. Any statements made by those former DAs doesn’t hold any water now.
It is more or less a moot point now, but if Burke killed Jonbenet, he couldn’t have been charged with murder anyway, unfortunately; and the statute of limitations seems to have run out for everything else.
Still, murder in the first was committed; and the Grand Jury got it right – the parents were each indicted with reckless endangerment and accessory after the fact. The limitations of the law don’t change the facts. The case is still open.

  15. what is the deal with feces in this family? It has been heavily reported Jon Benet wore diapers and had issues far beyond bed wetting. She would request any adult present to “wipe wipe” after using the bathroom particularly for bowel movements, making parents of friends at playdates feel awkward due to her age. The repeated vaginal infections were said to be linked to improper wiping which is a fairly common childhood ailment though i’m not sure it’s commonly seen to this age. Now reports that Burke smeared his feces all over items of hers. Any speculation about that or details that people may have heard?

  16. It certainly seems like those parents had other things they needed to hide, besides their son’s ability to severely injure his sister. That is what interests me most – why did those parents stage a scene instead of getting their daughter to the ER. My hunch is Patsy wanted to appear to be victims of a crime, instead of inadequate parents with a defective son. They would get sympathy instead of disgust and blame. Maybe there was something more sinister going on that needed to be hidden at all costs.

The motivations for a coverup is where the real story lies.
