The Dalai Lama’s recent shocking statement that only a “pretty woman” could become the 15th incarnation of the next Dalai Lama has shocked many. It makes one wonder whether he been spending too much time in Hollywood or he has been corrupted by Western influences. At first the BBC reporter thought it was the 80 year old Tibetan Dalai Lama’s attempt at humor, but the Dalai Lama assured the interviewer that he was dead serious as he went on to say that she must be pretty “ otherwise she would not be ‘much use.’
So in essence he pawns off his excuse for not wanting a new Dalai Lama on the Tibetan citizens and then on the next breath he blames the Chinese.
In Tibetan Buddhism the Dalai Lama’s soul is reincarnated in the body of a child on his death but China says it must approve the appointment of the next Dalai Lama and many in Tibet fear this is an attempt to split the country.Even if this is true, it seems very odd that the Dalai Lama would not stick up for his Tibetan tradition and enthusiastically assure his followers that there will be a new Dalai Lama upon his death as tradition states and that whether or not the Chnese recognize it, things will go forth.
Maybe he is done. Maybe doesn’t have it in him anymore to defend what he has apparently spent his life doing. Maybe he doesn’t care anymore. Or maybe he wants to bask in the glory of his legacy that there will be no one in the future to fill his shoes.
No matter what, his statement about a woman having no use unless she is pretty, gives us a clear glimpse into the sexist thinking of a superficial and simple minded man who has been hiding behind his cloak of religion for so many decades.
